Kerry,
I see northbound but does this work, southbound? I have in mind, taking a train from a place such as Moree or Tamworth, to Sone. I THOUGHT that the zone was in fact at MURRARUNDI. . . . so is it Scone now? If so, a person COULD go from Sydney to Scone by train, stop over, then take the train, to the north.
You can do in a day by departing Tamworth on the 10:27 XPT arriving at Scone 12:28 then departing for Newcastle on the 19:06 (M-F) Opal service. Each leg of the journey would be $2.50. You’d have six and a half hours to have a look around Scone. If you’re heading north from Sydney, there’s an Opal service that departs the Newcastle interchange at 16:29 (M-F) arriving Scone at 18:24. You could then stay overnight in Scone and catch the XPT that departs Scone at 13:37 to Tamworth the next afternoon.
